About

about3As with any new skill, we all have to start somewhere. GESSO provides a starting point for those interested in painting by offering clear, simple guides that allow you to jump right in. From the right tools and supplies, to painting fundamentals and techniques, to a little bit of art history, you’ll find everything you’ll need to begin this creative and rewarding practice.

I first began learning how to paint at a community art class when I was seven years old and have continued to develop my love for artmaking for over twenty years. I went on to study art as an undergrad, with a focus on painting, and received a BA in fine art and creative writing from the University of California, Riverside.

Professionally, I’ve worked as a freelance artist and have taught painting to beginners for several years. From that experience, I’ve developed a sense of what methods work best for new painters and as well as some common frustrations that come from starting this new and complex practice. I’ve also been there (and still am!) and continue to learn from each new project.

Painting is an ever-evolving skill that can be daunting, and at times frustrating, but is also incredibly rewarding. Whether it is something you want to pursue as a hobby, or if you aspire to becoming a professional artist, I hope these guides will help set you down the path to your creative goals.
